Newest Transit-Oriented Development Breaks Ground in Burgeoning Tacoma Dome District
Tacoma Trax adding 115 apartment homes, street level retail, immediate access to multi-modal transit to downtown community
TACOMA, Wash. – GIS Companies Group and DMG Capital Group, along with their project architect, City dignitaries and some 50 community stakeholders in attendance, broke ground this morning at Tacoma Trax, a dynamic mixed-use building in the heart of the Tacoma Dome District. The 5-story development is located steps away from a wide range of business and lifestyle offerings, as well as multiple modes of public transit. Tacoma Trax is due for completion in 2023.
“We identified this well-positioned site several years ago, so we’re incredibly excited to start construction on what we believe will be a game-changing project for this quickly emerging neighborhood,” said Eugene Gershman, CEO at GIS Companies Group, co-owner and general contractor of Tacoma Trax.
He added, “Today is the result of a tremendous collaboration between our award-winning project team, the City of Tacoma, Pierce Transit and many other key stakeholders in Tacoma’s downtown core.”
Speakers at the community-based event included GIS’s Gershman; Kristina Walker, Tacoma City Councilmember and Pierce Transit Commissioner; Dr. David Myaskovsky from DMG Capital, LLC, Trax’s co-ownership group; and Imad H. Bahbah, AIA, principal at Trax designer IHB Architects.
Following a short presentation to event attendees — representing the City of Tacoma, Tacoma City Council, Pierce Transit, industry and neighborhood associations, and community and civic organizations — event speakers officially started the project’s construction by breaking ground at the downtown parcel, where construction crews began initial site work several weeks ago.
Tacoma Trax is the area’s newest transit-oriented development, offering future residents and retail tenants convenient access to Sound Transit’s LINK light rail station; an Amtrak station; Sounder; Tacoma Dome Station multi-modal hub; local, regional, and national bus services; the Tacoma Dome; downtown restaurants and retail shops; and Freighthouse Square; and more.
When complete, Tacoma Trax will feature waterfront views, private balconies, 53 secure parking stalls, and an indoor, 15,000-square-foot farmers market space with roll-up garage doors. In cooperation with Pierce Transit and the agency’s ORCA for Multifamily Program, each Tacoma Trax resident will receive an annual regional ORCA transportation pass, helping to reduce traffic congestion, ease demand for limited parking and promote environmental sustainability.
